The document, rolled and bound with a strip of ribbon, is usually awarded on the day of graduation. Many graduates perceive the document as a symbol of freedom from school requirements and subsequent financial independence.
Diplomas are valuable because they are often required by employers as qualifying items during job applications. They can also be used as proof during application for graduate studies, whether within the country or abroad. It is precisely because of these uses that people are sometimes induced to use fake diplomas. A diploma or a degree mill is an organization that makes this possible. Without the appropriate accreditation from official educational authorities, this type of organization awards certifications with little or no academic basis. The document is awarded in exchange for profit.
Diploma mills have distinguishing characteristics that allow differentiation from real institutions. They are not officially accredited, they do not have teaching facilities, and they require no school visits or meetings with school personnel. The diplomas are often given on a mail-order basis and can be obtained within a few days or a few months. They also use advertisements that put heavy emphasis on the present tuition fees because the amount might increase later. The websites of such organizations usually do not have a domain ending in .edu, but this is not always the case.
Many companies also offer fake diplomas or certificates through the internet. They have promos such as “Buy One, Get One Free.” College or university diplomas and transcripts can cost as much as $400, with shipping fees already waived. Such companies operate worldwide and claim to be able to fake certificates in languages other than English.
It is important to distinguish fake academic institutions from legitimate ones because one might be getting a worthless diploma at a substantial price. Trying to pass fake diplomas as real is considered a crime in many places. Organizations which sell fake certifications usually evade the law but people who buy them and use them, knowing that they are fake are the ones that eventually suffer.
